Kirata bedevils the field

Shireen Kirata won every event to lead Salem to victory over Londonderry, Spaulding and Keene in gymnastics. Leah Jackson paced the second-place Lancers with two second places and one third. Taylor Buatti (floor) and Sam Cloutier also excelled for the Blue Devils as did Londonderry's Alli Yennaco and Cari O'Shea.

Leah Jackson and Miranda Marchetti went 1-2 in the all-around as Londonderry scored 112.9 points to cruise past Keene, Pelham and Windham. Lauren Massie had three seconds for Windham.

Gallo establishes new school record

Central Catholic senior Shilanna Gallo scored a 9.4 on the floor exercise to establish a new school record in the event. Gallo also won the vault (8.9), bars (9.4) and took first place in the all-around (36.0).

With the meet coming down to the final event, Central Catholic swept the floor exercise and went on to down Billerica 136.75-134.25. Courtney Smith (9.1), Tori Catanzano (8.9) and Giana Contrada (8.8) clinched the win.

Senior captain Shireen Kirata started the season with a bang for the Salem girls gymnastics team, taking first place in all events with a personal best in bars (8.55), beam (8.9) and all-around (35.4).

Placing top-three in every event, Courtney Thompson boosted Pinkerton to an easy season-opening gymnastics victory over Manchester Central, Londonderry and Exeter. Thompson took the all-around (34.95), winning the floor exercise (8.9) and the balance beam (9.15). Leah Jackson finished third in the all-around for the Lancers.

Rachel Mattison broke her own school record on the beam with a 9.5, placing second and helping Andover to a third place finish at yesterday's state gymnastics meet.

The Golden Warriors scored 142.675 points, which was just off the pace set by Barnstable (144.75) and Masconomet (143.65).

Salem gymnasts rule

Salem, paced by Leeann Vadala and Shareen Kirata, dominated a six-team meet at home to finish the regular season undefeated (21-0) and in prime position for the state meet Feb. 21 at Salem. Vadala broke the school record in the bars (9.4) and had a personal-best score in the floor (9.3) and a best-ever score of 35.9 while placing first in the all-around. Kirata had a PR score of 9.0 in the vault and a personal-best score of 34.7 in all-around.

Thompson's terrific

Courtney Thompson took first in the floor and third in the all-around to help lead Pinkerton (127.6) to a first-place finish  against Pelham (102.4), Souhegan (111.9) and Spaulding (122.1). Joining Thompson in winner's row was Alex Halle, who took third in the beam. Chelsea I'Anson of Pelham finished fifth in all-around.

Knights reign supreme

North Andover topped Masco 142.65-142.2 to improve to 8-1 and claim the CAL championship. Michelle Hall took second in both bars and floor and won all-around, while Paulina Neukuckatz placed first in beam. Said coach Ron Kearn, "Masconomet is always a power team. We knew we would have to hit all of the events in order to win, and we did."
