Down to the wire

It came down to the final event, the 400-meter freestyle relay, between Haverhill and Lowell, but behind the team of Carson Bevilacqua, Vinnie Nolet, A.J. Reid and Zach Koffman the Hillies were able to pull out the thrilling 93-92 meet victory. The Hillies touched on the 400 relay in 3:57.67 while Lowell came in at 4:00.66. Koffman won three events for Haverhill, and senior Jon Aveni, normally a diver, won his first ever 100 freestyle in 1:03.25.

Historic win

North Andover boys swimming beat Haverhill in a dual meet for the first time ever, taking Wednesday's meet 93-28. Frank Zhou and Thomas Bullock each had two first place finishes in individual races, and the Knights swept the three relays as well.

Turk on top

North Andover's Joseph Turk won a pair of events at the Division 1 Boys State Meet, helping lead St. John's Prep to the championship.
Turk dominated the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle.
Andover High took fourth place overall, led by Eric Shi, who took the title in the 100 breaststroke with a 56.76 clocking. Central Catholic was fifth and featured a pair of state champions in Drew Carbone (100 back) and Will Pannos (100 fly).
Haverhill's top performer was Matt Amedeo, taking 8th overall in the 500 free.

Carbone stands out


Drew Carbone took first in the backstroke with a 50.88, was second in the 200 IM (1:53.37) and was also on two placing relays to pace Central to fifth place at the North sectional Sunday. Will Pannos also had a fine day for the Raiders with a second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 beaststroke. For Andover, which finished fourth, Eric Shi won the 100 breaststroke in 57.97.

Double Record

Phillips beat Northfield Mt. Hermon 88-49 highlighted by a new school and Big Blue pool record of 1:25.30 in the 200 freestyle relay. The swimmers were co-captain Darren Ty of North Andover, Marcello Rossi, Nick Isenhower and Christian Alberga.

Hillies edge out Knights

Even though North Andover took first in eight of the 12 events, Haverhill swimming was able to capture enough points down the scoresheet to pull out a tight 94-91 win. Matt Amedeo took first in the 200-yard freestyle and helped win the 200 freestyle relay, and Kasey Crawford and Zack Koffman won the diving and 500 freestyle respectively.

Still unbeaten


Andover's swimming team remained unbeaten (5-0) with an 86-79 victory over Belmont as Aishik lala won both the 50 and 100 freestyle and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay. Nick Bradshaw was first in the 100 backstroke and was on two winning relay teams.

Haverhill needed first and third in the final relay, but missed out on the third spot by .02 seconds, falling to Belmont in swimming, 93-90. Josh Driscoll and Matt Amedeo dominated in the water for the 1-2 Hillies.

Eric Shi was a double winner for Andover, winning the 200-yard IM and 100 breaststroke while also helping Andover to wins in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay in the team's 96-90 win over Acton-Boxboro.

Walshes pace Knights

Aidan and Dylan Walsh, along with Frank Zhou, were each double winners for the North Andover swim team and also helped take first in two other relays as the Knights beat Malden Catholic 96-74 on Tuesday.

The Pinkerton boys swim team took first in every event in Tuesday's meet against Manchester Central, Memorial and Trinity. Christian Arrell, Zach Denbo and Bernard Surwirjo were all double winners for the Astros.

Shi leads Andover to fifth

Eric Shi placed second in the 100 breaststroke (58.26) and fourth in 200 IM (1:55.93) to help lead Andover to a fifth-place finish at the Division 1 Mass. boys state swim meet Sunday. Andover led all MVC schools with 144 points. Central Catholic came in seventh (133 points). Haverhill was 17th (41 points) and North Andover came in 25th (20 points). Central's Drew Carbone came in second in the 100 backstroke (50.73) and third in the 200 IM (1:55.47). He and Will Pannos, Griffin Anderson and Lucas Barnes also helped the Raiders' 200 medley relay to a third-place finish. Pannos was second in the 100 butterfly (51.23) as well. Andover's Adi Arifovic took third in the 200 freestyle (1:43.55) and third in the 500 freestyle (4:41.58). He also was on Andover's third place 400 freestyle relay with Shi, Max Blanch and Nathan Hamer.
