Haverhill volleyball picked up its first win of the season as the Hillies downed Dracut, 25-14, 25-22, 25-10. Brett Pettis led the way with 12 kills and four aces, and Kyle Carter chipped in 25 assists and five kills of his own.

Washburn wipes out Newton South

Matt Washburn had a big game for Andover in its five-game win over Newton South. In spite of trailing 14-11 at one point in the decisive game, the Warriors stormed back to win 17-15. Washburn racked up 20 kills and 10 blocks while Mike Emmons dished out 32 assists. Tommy Busta played great defense in his first action of the season (he had been sidelined with a shoulder injury), as did Mike Todisco.

Slowed a bit in the first two games by a spirited Timberlane squad, the Blue Devils (19-0) put it together in the final game to complete a 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 sweep and, with their nation’s-best 93rd straight victory, captured their fifth straight Division 1 state title.
