Wildcats claw to top

 

With its back to the wall, Whittier Tech delivered in style, grabbing a share of the Commonwealth Conference lead with a 9-6 win over Shawsheen Tech. Dillon Ryan picked up the win, striking out five in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief work. Nate Allen paced the Wildcats attack with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Steve Surette and standout frosh Nathan Frongillo each had two hits and drove in two. The Cats can lock up at least a piece of the title with Shawsheen and Greater Lowell by knocking off Minuteman in the league finale.

Comeback Kids

Down 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, Central Catholic mounted an incedible rally. After a hit batsman, and two walks loaded the bases with no outs, Lowell turned a double play, but Cal Beneze scored to make it 6-4. Mike Amaral's pinch hit single put the score at 6-5, and a single by Zach Bardwell and an error on the right fielder tied the game six. Finally Connor Perry delivered the walk off base hit to score Bardwell and give the Raiders a thrilling victory.

Weisman does it all for Knights

Mike Weisman cracked a two-run double in the first and an RBI single in the third then came on for the save as North Andover tripped Pentucket 5-4. Sophomore Tyler Leavitt went six strong innings to get the win. Adam Newell was the hard-luck loser, giving up no earned runs but falling victim to a slew of errors.

MVC champions

Mike Calzetta's complete-game win locked up the Merrimack Valley championship for Lawrence, for the second straight year.  The Lancers put away Central Catholic, 5-1 to improve to 13-1 (11-0 MVC),  Harvey  Blanco had two hits and a pair of RBIs to lead the Lawrence hitting attack.

Surprise!

After yielding just seven runs in its last five games including three straight shutouts, three North Andover pitchers were battered for 12 hits as North Reading dealt the Scarlet Knights their second loss, 9-2. Aiding his own complete-game cause, Eric Maltacea rapped out three hits for the Hornets (7-7) and got ample help from Bobby Rosano (three hits and three RBIs). Connor Walsh and Alec Jillson plated the Knights' runs.
