Wolfendale throws for 420 yards, but Brooks falls

NEWBURY — Methuen's Michael Wolfendale threw for a career-high 420 yards, which is believed to be a school record, but Brooks fell to Governor's Academy 49-27 on Saturday.

Wolfendale completed 28-of-45 passes in his career day. He threw two touchdowns, a 30-yard score to Gabe Fitzgerald in the second quarter and a 32-yard TD to Jackson Connors-McCarthy in the fourth. The quarterback also ran for a 5-yard touchdown in the second.

Three Brooks receivers went over 100 yards receiving — Rayden Waweru (122 yards), Conners-McCarthy (123 yards) and Gabe Fitzgerald (124 yards). 

Brooks (0-3) will look to earn its first win next Saturday at Rivers (6 p.m.)

Brooks rolled past Governor's, 75-53, to advance to the NEPSAC semifinals for the ninth year in a row. Myles Foster (22), Sam Thomson (15) and Darrel Yepdo (18) cracked double figures in the win,  Coach John McVeigh's squad will take on St. Luke's Saturday in the Class B semis.

Brooks falls to Governor's

BYFIELD — Brooks fell behind by 27 points in the first quarter, on the way to losing to Governor's Academy 34-13 on Saturday.
 
Brooks (1-2) broke up the shutout in the third, when John Manzi scored a 1-yard touchdown. The Green-and-White added another score in the fourth, on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Michael Wolfendale to to Connor Lang.
 
Brooks will travel to Rivers on Saturday (3 p.m.)

School record

The Governor's Academy girls 4x200 relay team of June Stevens, Erin Hanlon, Julia Russolillo and Kianne Benjamin set a new school record on Saturday, taking first with a time of 1:54.53 to lead the team against Phillips Andover, Wilbraham and Monson and the Hyde School. Governor's finished second as a team with 56 points, also getting first place finishes from Benjamin in the 55 dash (7.43), Grace Everett in the 1,000 (3:30.29) and high jump 4-8 and Russolillo in the pole vault (8-0)

Jacqui Furey scored with virtually no time remaining on the clock to tie the game, but Governor's Academy field hockey wound up losing in overtime 2-1 to Nobles. Goalie Delaney Bashaw made 14 saves in the loss.
