Hornets steamroll Winthrop

 
North Reading senior C.J. McCarthy broke the 1,000-yard barrier, and he did it the loud way, running a dozen times for 158 yards and four touchdowns before retiring for the night at halftime as the Hornets strolled over Winthrop in a Division 4, non-playoff matchup, 42-6.
McCarthy now has 176 carries for 1,155 yards on the year for 4-4 North Reading.
The Hornets rolled it up on the ground with 24 carries for 295 yards with the first teamers in the first half. Overall, it was 47 for 441. Blake Tamlyn-Hayden chipped in a 46-yard TD run in his 89-yard night.

Wildcats battle back

After battling back from a pair of deficits, one as large as three runs, Whittier rode Destiny Jordan's sixth-inning RBI single to a 5-4 victory over Winthrop in the Division 3 North semifinals at UMass Lowell. The Wildcats will take on St. Mary's of Lynn in the sectional final Sunday at Martin Field in Lowell.

The Andover girls hockey team scored twice in the second period, on goals by Veronica Alois and Mikayla Panneton and then held on for a 2-1 Division 1 North victory over Winthrop. Goalie Mackenzie Dutton had 28 saves.

North Andover freshman Nicole Stevens continued to improve from a preseason injury, winning both the bars and Beam (9.3) as the Knights (2-0) whipped Winthrop 128.85-117.25. Jessica Whitehead won the vault and floor and was first in all-around with a 33.05.

The taller they are, the harder they fall

Georgetown took on a taller Winthrop team in the first of a home-and-home series and scrapped for a 54-50 victory. Defense was key as Michelle Reilly (10 points and 6 steals) and Rachel Sherman (11 points and 5 steals) created valuable turnovers while Morgan Gott (7 points and 8 rebounds) worked hard in the paint for the Royals.
