Hillies finish perfect season on court


BILLERICA — Haverhill's girls volleyball team finished an impressive perfect (11-0) season Wednesday and reached their goals in the process.

By defeating Billerica 3-0, the Hillies broke the former school record of 10 straight wins after already capturing the MVC Division 1 title.

Haverhill rebounded from a first set loss to defeat Billerica 3-1 to remain unbeaten (10-0). Jada Burdier was huge with 20 kills, sister Kya had 30 assists and Shiloh Osmer had 33 digs and six aces.

Even with Nadeshka Bridgewater unable to play with an injured hand, Central Catholic's girls (17-1) whipped a strong Billerica club, 47-22, to cap off its third straight unbeaten MVC championship season. Claudia Porto had 9 points and 7 rebounds while Claire Finney had 9 points, 3 assists and 6 rebounds for the Raiders, who play in the Comcast Tournament in Woburn this weeken.

After falling to Billerica earlier in the season, the Andover boys hockey team came out with a different forecheck and outshot the Indians 10-1 in the first period of Wednesday's rematch in an eventual 3-0 win. Steve Ingram scored twice and Jack Brezner had 20 saves in the shutout.

Secretary of Defense

Andrew Lussier led an inspired defensive effort and Methuen tripped MVC Small-Leading Billerica, 47-46. "He was on Ryan Murphy the majority of the game and Murphy is a monster," said Ranger coach Anthony Faradie. "Andrew did a phenomenal job." Murphy, who was leading the league at 23.4 ppg, was limited to 16 hard-earned points while Kevin Garcia led MHS with 18 and Mitchell Crowe added 13. The Rangers also got a boost from a loud home crowd.
