Zach Fay struck out six and allowed just five hits in a complete game, while going 4 for 5 at the plate with a triple and double, one run scored and an RBI to lead Whittier past Essex Tech 10-3. Brendan Dodier added three hits, four runs and two RBIs for the winners.

Whittier softball opened its season with a 10-1 win over Essex Tech as newcomer Emily Graham threw a 3-0hitter, striking out 12, Alicia Habib slugged two home runs, Alyssa Michel was 4 for 4  and Kailyn Hurley hit a home run.

Essex Tech rallies from 19 down to edge Reggies

HATHORNE — Devin Lebron's fourth TD of the game, coming from three yards out with 13 seconds to play, and Rocco Schirripa's ensuing conversion rush gave Essex Tech (1-1) a thrilling win and Greater Lawrence a heart-breaking loss. The Reggies led 26-7 at halftime on Friday. But Essex Tech stormed back and took the lead. It looked like the Reggies would pull it out when Gustavo Regalado scored on a 15-yard run with 5:26 left. But the conversion rush failed and that was big.

North Andover, led by Alyssa Roderick, continued its offensive explosion, crushing Essex Tech 17-4. Roderick was 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored and 6 RBIs as North Andover (10-4) qualifieied for the tournament. Morgan Reitano also had a homer and drove in five runs.

Rough start dooms Whittier

HAVERHILL — The start could not have gone any worse for Whittier.

Essex Tech broke a long touchdown on the second play of the game, then after blocking a punt scored two plays later. The Hawks were in control from there, downing the Wildcats 28-0 on Saturday.

The Greater Lawrence volleyball team defeated Essex Tech 3-1 to qualify for the tournament. Lucy Ortega led the Reggies (10-6) in blocks (7) and assists (16). Alyssa Goulet led in kills with 17.
