The Greater Lawrence Baseball Umpires Association and Merrimack Valley Umpires Association are sponsoring a class to train umpires. Former Andover track coach Brenda Clarkwarne has started a track and field program at Bradford Christian. The Sentinels had a meet on Wednesday, and the girls team came in third out of four teams with 10 points. Madeline Lacourse ran a 2:51 half mile to lead the girls, and on the boys end Haverhill's Reid Swartzentruber (102-5, javelin) and Sam Caruso (63.97, 400) had solid days.

Andover's Emma Kelley dropped 19 points on two 3-pointers to help Phillips Academy pick up its first win of the season over Brewster Academy 46-36. 

Patrick Daly scored two goals to lead Phillips to a season-opening 7-1 demolition of Brewster.

Sophomore Bella Papapetros of North Andover padded her team-leading scoring total with a first-period goal, but Brewster Academy surged back for a 2-1 victory over Brooks.

 Merrimack College sophomore goalie Joe Cannata has been named Hockey East Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week Monday. Cannata led Merrimack to a sweep over  UMass, making 42 saves for his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 win on Saturday. He stopped 63 of 64 shots on the weekend, as the Warriors swept the Minutemen for the first time since 1998. Since returning to the lineup on February 6, Cannata is 4-0-1 with a 1.18 goals-against-average and a .956 save percentage.   Merrimack (13-15-1, 10-11-1 HEA) continues its push for the Hockey East Playoffs against Boston College at 7 p.m. today at Conte Forum. The Warriors, unbeaten in five straight, have never posted a six-game unbeaten streak in Hockey East games.

Freshman Bobby Adam flipped a backhand into the net with 28 seconds left in overtime to lift the Highlanders (9-6-2). Ben Bradley turned aside 42 shots to keep Pingree in it, while Ben McLaughlin scored twice in the second period to knot the game 3-3.
