PEABODY | The festive atmosphere was unmistakable at Bishop Fenwick's football game last night. The Crusaders played in the glow of permanent lights on their new artificial turf field before a big crowd on a perfect weather night.

Molly Foye notched a hat trick | her second of the week | during Manchester Essex's 3-0 win over Masconomet. Lee Stroman, Stephanie Lamattina and Molly Thomas added assists for the Hornets, who improved to 6-0.

BOXFORD | The Masconomet boys' soccer team has taken on some tough teams in the early going | yet is still unbeaten. Yesterday afternoon, behind a pair of goals from senior captain Kevin VanLenten, the Chieftains methodically handled visiting Hamilton-Wenham, 3-0, in their first Cape Ann League contest of the season.

Bishop Fenwick's undefeated football team is averaging 40 points in its first two contests, so one of the tasks for the Crusaders' coaching staff this week is to keep the players humble.

That, of course, is easier said than done when you have immature players, who tend to let things go in one ear and out the other. But the Crusaders appear to have enough experience and savvy to avoid that trap, particularly since the opponent in Sunday night's game (6:30 p.m.) on the new artificial turf at Bishop Fenwick is 2-0 Masconomet.

North Andover fell to Masconomet 1-0. Knights goalkeeper Maya Miatkowski kept her team in the game, making 11 big saves. Other North Andover standouts included midfielders Jackie Sullivan, Morgan Healey and Kelly Cardinal.

Masconomet beat North Andover 1-0. Brad McDonald scored the only goal for the Chieftains. Ali Olia played well on offense while Andrew Panella had a strong defensive game.

Masconomet allowed a goal with 2:30 remaining in regulation and settled for a 3-3 tie with Pentucket. Kelly Gibson scored two goals for the Chieftains.

Ashley McKenelley notched a goal and an assist as Masconomet downed Wilmington 3-1. Danielle Staub and Lucy Gildein also scored for the Chieftains, and Annie Burns made four saves in the win.

BEVERLY | If the temperature really reached the mid-90s Saturday afternoon, then there's no question it was triple-digit heat bouncing off the rubbery field turf at Endicott College when the Masconomet football team entertained Christ the King High School of New York in each teams' season opener.
