Historic time

Newburyport's Sam Acquaviva made history on Wednesday, running the second fastest time ever at Maudslay State Park since Newburyport cross country first began using the course in 1987. Acquaviva completed the 2.97-mile course in 15:07, finishing first to lead the Clippers to a 20-41 win over Manchester Essex. John Lucey finished second (15:54) and Dreese Fadil placed fourth (16:17) as Newburyport improved to 9-0 on the season.

Clippers fall to Hornets

Newburyport got a second-half goal from Callie Beauparlant off a corner, but it wasn't enough to break Manchester Essex's long-running unbeaten streak within the Cape Ann League, as the Hornets pulled out the 2-1 win. Gabby Taynor made six saves in net for Newburyport, while Manchester Essex's goals came courtesy of Bridget Twombly and Christina Bullock. Manchester Essex (2-0-1) is now 51-0-6 in its last 57 CAL games dating back to 2014. Newburyport is now 2-3 and will face Lynnfield on Thursday.

Amesbury girls soccer improved to 2-0 on the year, picking up a 2-0 win over Manchester Essex while getting two goals from Chelsea Lynch and two assists from freshman McKenna Hallinan. Alli Napoli made 11 saves to pick up her second shutout of the year.

Hornets pull away

The Pentucket and Manchester Essex girls lacrosse team were going back and forth late into Thursday's Division 2 North quarterfinal, but over the final 10 minutes the Hornets pulled away, rallying to beat Pentucket 12-8. Clara Dore scored five goals in the loss, Jacqui Cloutier had two goals and four assists, and Caroline Cloutier scored the remaining goal as the Sachems finished their season 11-6. Manchester Essex now advances to face rival Ipswich in the Division 2 North semifinals.

Wild win

Triton was in full control against Manchester Essex, until an eight run top of the sixth suddenly put the Vikings down by a run. Facing the prospect of a crushing loss, the Vikings bounced back for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, walking off with the 12-11 win after Marc Wood scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Tommy Lapham went 3 for 3 with three runs, Cole Lojek was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, and Ross Lojek went 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Stage set

Triton softball downed Manchester Essex 15-5 on Thursday, improving to 15-1 on the season and setting the stage for a Cape Ann League showdown with undefeated North Reading on Monday. Triton has now won 12 games in a row, with the team's only loss all season coming against the Hornets back in April.
