Local parents of adolescent boys who are looking to capitalize on a Division 1 college scholarship might consider sending their child to The Governor's Academy to play lacrosse.

The Govs boys lacrosse team appears to be the nesting point for budding athletes looking to play for top 10 programs nationally. This year's team, which yesterday finished a perfect (17-0) season by capturing its first outright Independent School League title in its 72-year history, fields two of the most highly recruited prospects in the nation. Walpole-native Mike Shakespeare accepted a full scholarship to University of Maryland last spring as a junior. Jeff Muscatello, a Wells, Maine-native, also accepted a full scholarship as a junior to a perennial top-10 team | University of North Carolina.

Michaela Colbert and Haley Thompson each scored four goals but it wasn't enough to lead a second half charge by Pingree. Sam Taylor and Liza Richardson each scored one goal, while Liv Whitney finished with 14 saves.

The grand opening last December of the exquisite and state-of-the-art Whiston-Bragdon Arena on the Governor's Academy campus has opened new doors for two of the local hockey programs: Newburyport and Triton.

The Govs (5-0) will share the Westminster Tournament title after posting the victories. The tournament was shortened due to poor weather on Sunday.

Against Brooks, Alex Carpenter scored a natural hat trick, and Abbey Karin was a stalwart on defense.

NORTH ANDOVER | Brooks tied the game early in the second quarter, but could do little from there and fell to the Governor's Academy 42-12.

Jordan Johnson led the Green and White with 65 yards rushing on eight carries and a 6-yard touchdown while Robert Perryman rushed 13 times for 62 yards and a 9-yard score.

The Governor's Academy football coach Mark Gerry can rest easy this weekend.

The Govs gave the veteran coach reason for optimism yesterday with a 28-7 victory over Middlesex School at The Governor's Academy. Gerry expressed some concern prior to the opener as to whether his team would be able to fill the void left by last year's quarterback Brian Day and tailback Tim Langmaid.

The sound of the public address announcer alone could bring Governor's Academy football coach Mark Gerry a feeling of comfort last season.

"At starting quarterback, senior Brian Day ... At starting tailback, senior Tim Langmaid."

Phillips Academy defeated Governor's Academy 3-0. Colleen Flanagan, Eliza Flynn, and Kaitlyn McInnis scored for the Big Blue.
