White dazzles again

Two outings into the season, and Phillips Academy junior Thomas White has yet to yield a hit. In Friday's 3-0 win over Belmont Hill, the lefty went three hitless innings, striking out eight. A week ago, he fanned eight in four hitless frames against Bridgton. Haverhill's Tommy McAndrews was 2 for 2 in the win.

Brooks takes down unbeaten

The Brooks boys soccer team got goals from Jack Brown, Christian Bejar and Abhay Gandhi to earn a 3-2 win over Belmont Hill, which had entered the game an undefeated 8-0-2. Brooks moves to 6-2-3 with the win.

9-inning thriller

It took two extra innings, but Phillips Andover topped Belmont Hill, 3-1, after senior Jackson Emus hit a double in the top of the ninth to drive in two runs and win the game. Sophomores Matt Sapienza and Jacob Lapp, both of North Andover, combined to pitch 6 1/3 innings, allow four hits, one run and strike out eight, as Lapp earned his first varsity win.

Locals advance to Nationals

Three athletes each from Brooks and Phillips wrestling advanced to Nationals by virtue of placing in the top-8 during Saturday's New England championship. They were Corey Gaffney (6th, 106), Kelvin Griffin (2nd, 113) and Anthony Burnett (5th, 285) of Brooks, and Vinny Marino (4th, 132), Eamon Garrity-Rokous (3rd, 152) and Pablo Sanchez (8th, 182) of Phillips.

The Brooks boys basketball team is at it again, defeating Belmont Hill 62-46 in an ISL showdown that lifted the Green and White to their 65th straight league win. Brian Wright-Kinsey led Brooks (20-0) with 25 points.

Governor's wrestling splits

Governor's wrestling split its tri-meet, beating Portsmouth Abbey 42-38 before losing to Belmont Hill 66-16. Cara Nugent, Mitch West and Kristoff Burrell all went 2-0 on the day at 113, 120 and 126 pounds respectively.

Brooks still unbeaten

In a battle of unbeaten teams in league play, Brooks boys basketball beat Belmont Hill 49-40 despite not making any 3-pointers to improve to 19-0 overall. Fru Che had 20 points to lead Brooks, who remains in the drivers seat to win the ISL.

Repeat champions

Brooks seniors Nick Konovalchik and Owen Rosenberger, both of North Andover, repeated as Independent School League champs, breezing to titles in their weight classes. Konovalchik won with a 14-2 major decision in the 160-pound finals while the unbeaten Rosenberger won 6-2.

Coach's finale

 

In his last dual meet as head coach, Alex Konovalchik watched Brooks fall to powerful Belmont Hill 54-19. Nick Konovalchik moved up a weight to 160 and still had a major decision over a returning New England placer and heavyweight Owen Rosenberger remained unbeaten with a first period pin.
